HUNTER AND HUNTRESS GUILD LEVELS –PERSONA CONTEST CRITERIA
( no animals are hurt or harmed by members of the Hunt Guild at SCA events)
Novice Hunter (everyone can enter at this level)
Judging Criteria (1-3 points)
Show an interest in developing a hunter persona.
PERSONA CREATION: The Candidate must develop an authentic persona based on historical research for any pre-17th C persona. Information provided for this category must include: full name, date and place of birth, present age, current residence, and a brief personal history. All Candidates are required to provide a bibliography of books and articles used to research the various aspects of their personas.
Varlet de Vénerie (Entry-level Hunter/Huntress)
Judging Criteria (4-6 points avg needed)
PERSONA CREATION: The Hunter/Huntress Candidate must develop an authentic persona based on historical research for any pre-17th C persona. Information provided for this category must include: full name, date and place of birth, present age, current residence, and a brief personal history. The candidate must be certain to indicate exactly what form of hunting they do. All candidates are required to provide a bibliography of books and articles used to research the various aspects of their hunting personas.
CALLIGRAPHY: The Candidate must provide a calligraphed introduction to their persona. Information in this must include the information noted above. Only an 8½" x 11" sheet of the introduction must be calligraphed. The criteria listed here is a minimum standard, it is not designed to limit creativity. Other persona information can be typed (double spaced) or legibly printed on subsequent pages. The calligraphy must reflect the style of writing used for your persona. In the case of the Persona who is illiterate, they must produce their document, but can claim that a scribe wrote it for them.
COSTUMING/ACCOUTREMENT: The Candidate must make a complete and detailed costume for their persona, including undergarment/s, over garment/s, and headwear. NOTE: costumes/accoutrements/hunting equipment need not be made by the applicant, extra points will be given for those that are handmade by them.
HUNTING EQUIPMENT-The Candidate must provide a complete set of hunting equipment specifically for their persona, i.e., bow and arrows, quiver, hunting spear, fishing gear, etc. NOTE: hunting equipment need not be made by the applicant, but extra points will be given for those that are handmade by them
HUNTING SKILLS The Candidate must demonstrate a minor knowledge of any period hunting technique. Possible examples include: falconry, trapping, horsemanship (chase/weapons handling), coursing, archery, and spear work.. Live animals are not necessary for this demonstration. No animals will be killed or harmed for this demonstration. Documentation of technique, materials, and elements specific to persona are required. Extra points if candidate has bred or trained hunting animals used in the demonstration.
Aide de Venerie (mid-level Hunter/Huntress)
Judging Criteria (5-7 avg judging points) Items judged at first level must be used towards this next level
TECHNOLOGY: The Candidate must demonstrate a skill or proficiency appropriate to their persona that is not covered in the other categories. Examples include: herbalism, wood carving, leatherworking tanning, animal husbandry,firestarting,etc. Documentation of technique, materials, and elements specific to persona are required.
BARDIC ENTERTAINMENT: The Candidate must memorize and perform a period hunting song, story, or poem of reasonable length. Documentation is encouraged.
HUNTING SKILLS The Candidate must demonstrate knowledge of any second period hunting technique other than the one shown for the Novice. Possible examples include: falconry, trapping, horsemanship (chase/weapons handling), coursing, archery, and spear work.. Live animals are not necessary for this demonstration. No animals will be killed or harmed for this demonstration. Documentation of technique, materials, and elements specific to persona are required. Extra points if candidate has bred or trained hunting animals used in the demonstration.
EVERYDAY LIFE: The Candidate must demonstrate knowledge of everyday occurrences in the life of their personas such as pastimes, religious observances , and other aspects of their persona particularly as relates to their style of hunting.
Veneur (Highest Level Hunter/Huntress)
Judging Criteria (8-10 avg points) Items judged at first two levels must be used towards this next level
HUNTING DEMO: The Candidate must prove their ability to ‘hunt’ on a simulated hunt course NOTE: simulated hunts are acceptable as real animals are not allowed to be killed or harmed at an SCA event. Techniques should coincide with what is appropriate to their persona. Techniques may include any of those below, but if you can convince the autocrat of a feasible method of testing, others may be chosen. If a technique other than those listed is chosen, the candidate must be prepared to demonstrate proficiency should the judges decide they are not convinced of the persona's ability to hunt. Documentation is required. It should include the availability of specific weapons or methods, and that it was acceptable or possible for a hunter/tress of this culture and time period to use and practice this skill. Knowledge of weaponry specific to the persona should be indicated, but demonstration and testing will be confined to SCA-legal weapons, protection and procedures. Examples include coursing, falconry demo, riding or running on a ‘hunt course’ using hunt weaponry, earthdogs demo, ferreting demo,etc.
GAME PREPARATION: The candidate should be able to discuss food and diet in general and specifically about game. Should have knowledge of sources of hunted game (born on own lands, imported, trade, etc.) and preparation and storage methods, the equipment used for these, and customs for persona. Cooking or food preparation (like skinning and then cooking the game) can form part of this category but is not required.

5 -- The information is within period, accurate to persona and complete in requested information.
7 -- Complete, accurate, in period, documentation provided, well detailed social and personal history, able to maintain persona during competitions.
10 -- Same as 7, plus ability to deal with other people while in persona, able to stay in persona all weekend. Documentation is provided.
CALLIGRAPHY:
1 -- The alphabet style is of modern design; use of blatantly modern materials.
5 -- The work looks authentic, but felt tips or obviously inauthentic materials or techniques were used.
7 -- The work is done on appropriate paper, the ink was used in fill or dip pens, the alphabet is period, layout and text are appropriate to persona period.
10 -- Special effort has been made to use period materials and techniques, including page layout. Documentation is provided.
EVERYDAY LIFE:* Judging in this competition might be based on an informal gathering where personas might discuss the visit of a reigning monarch, anticipation of a coming holiday, their position in society.(NOTE: Habitat and Food are judged in a round-table discussion. Since they overlap and intertwine so thoroughly with Everyday Life, we have decided that the best way of judging these categories is to combine the round-table discussion of Everyday Life with the round-table discussions of these categories.)

7 -- Accurate as to period, able to project information to others present without it being dragged out of them.

COSTUMING/ACCOUTREMENT :* Judging will be based on construction and design; the applicants may be asked to show the inside of their clothing. (If this is done, it WILL be done in a discreet manner and will not include the last layer of clothing).

5 -- Looks authentic on the surface, but inauthentic elements in design, color, fabric, etc. ("theatre costume" - e.g. fake layers).
7 -- Authentic in both look and feel; period colors, fabric either period or close, construction appropriate to period.
10 -- Same as 5, plus special effort to achieve total period effect (e.g. all hand-sewn, or hand-done embellishment, or accessories made by entrant to enhance total look, or entirely period construction and techniques). Documentation is provided.

10 -- Special care is taken to enhance authenticity, in addition to above (e.g. period instrumental accompaniment, period costumes, props, or embellishments, etc.). Documentation is provided.
